I like Doomtree because they’re doing their own thing. But let’s describe just a little bit what they are for those who don’t know them. Doomtree are a DIY hiphop collective from Minneapolis, Minnesota formed of seven members (the most well known being P.O.S.). Most music press describe them as punk influenced indie rap which make them sound as an underground copy of Limp Bizkit (eeesh, I know!). Quite far from the truth as you’ll surely hear on the group’s second effort, No kings.
They have the same influences as everyone else but they have a particular way to mixing them together. For exemple there is a synthy eighties vibe in tracks like The Grand Experiment and Own Yours but not near the instrumental sound of some beatmakers right now. Of course there are some more “traditional” guitar/bass guitar sounds like in No Way or Punch-Out but their punk influences show more in their attitude. There is a will to communicate here. Not to brag about themselves. The title of the album is really fitting. A perfect blend of Fugazi and Wu-Tang Clan. It’s not really surprising that one member (Cecil Otter) collaborated with another musician on a mashup album of both, Wugazi: 13 Chambers. I like Doomtree because they’re doing their own thing. Really. Something not that usual in the hiphop world.
There is no video yet for the album so here is the first single, The Grand Experiment.
