After almost 20 years of existence, and now into their 10th full length record I think we’re all guilty of taking The Roots for granted. They tour constantly, and put out records every other year like clockwork. But, with the amount of shitty music around these days let’s not forget how important the Philly group still are.
So when I finally pop in a new Roots records it’s always with great expectations. I didn’t know about the about the concept of the record but I could tell about halfway into it that there had to be some kind of a story behind it. Well, apparently it is “about shattered dreams and early death, an existential retelling of the short life of one Redford Stevens (1974-1999)”. A sad and melancholic record, but a beautiful one.
I listened to “Undun” about three times in a row today and this is the song that I kept going back to.
