Initially coming across this release because of the Herbert remix it contains, I was happily surprised by the flip. One of those times a curious couple clicks pays off, ending in you sitting on two hot tunes instead of one. B-Side surprise is where it’s at!
This one comes from the Pampa camp, a relatively new label headed in Berlin by DJ Koze. They’ve been releasing music steadily since 2009, and have always been pushing interesting, unconventional takes on house and techno. Die Vögel‘s back catalogue is sparse, both releases on Pampa, so it’s great to see the producers broadening their strokes and widening their avenues of sound.
The remix is a beautifully rolling, ascending rhythm, sparkling onwards into a realm of layered horns and keys, floating on top of one of Die Vögel’s signature undulating bass lines. I won’t spoil the ending, where you are bound to be taken by the eerie choral mutations that arise seemlessly into the midst of this lush techno landscape.
All together a great release, I suggest checking out the DJ Koze remix of Herbert’s classic “It’s Only” on the flip for some heavy, housey, bass line madness. It’s a whole ‘nother Future Classic!
