Film: “All Ears – A Glimpse into the Los Angeles Beat Community”

The amount of experimental hip hop coming out of Los Angeles over the last ten years is matched only by the number of genre names attached to it. Cue many an infuriating conversation about Flying Lotus’s evolving sound, just how much swing is appropriate and what on earth to call it.

Luckily, filmmaker Gus Sutherland is here to shed some light on the birth of experimental hip hop/glitch/wonky/etc with a new documentary. All Ears takes in the LA Beat Scene, with appearances from Ras G, Kutmah, Dâm-Funk, House Shoes, DJ Nobody and the Low End Theory community among others.

However you feel about the music (and whatever you insist on calling it) it should be a good watch. All Ears was screened at SXSW 2013 and more screenings are planned later this year. Stay tuned to the All Ears Facebook page or @gussutherland on Twitter for more news.
