To be honest, any song that opens with the classic Isaac Hayes “Ike’s Rap II” sample starts off on my good side.
However, it didn’t take very long for me to pause and pay close attention to what was going here. A R&B song that doesn’t follow the current 2015 blueprints. A nice concept, intelligent lyrics, good crisp production and the 18 year old Canadian newcomer Alessia Cara who has a really nice clean voice that doesn’t need 12 effects to make it sound good.
We don’t cover a ton of “pop” releases here, there are certainly enough media outlets for that. But we root and believe in the idea of quality popular music…
“Here” is an anthem for “anti-social pessimists” as Cara points out “I don’t dance. Don’t ask. I don’t need a boyfriend.” Actually, if I was 18 I would have a huge crush on Alessia.
