Crucial Material – February 2, 2018
Welcome back to another week of fantastic new music!
This week’s selections touch on some heavy remixes, 12″ must-haves, minimalist nerve-coolers, and Irish rarities. Enough squawkin’ – let’s go!
Hector Plimmer “Sunshine Remixed Sampler” (Albert’s Favourites)
Following Hector’s acclaimed Sunshine LP on Albert’s Favourites, the label has put together a fantastic remix album featuring the likes of Hello Skinny and Modified Man. As a teaser next week a 12” sampler drops with the previously digital-only Deoke and Glenn Astro mixes and brand new Mr Beatnick and Reginald Omas Mamode IV remixes. This week we have got to share Mamode’s beautiful keyboard driven mix of the title track that is faintly reminiscent of YNQ/Madlib’s Stevie flips.. But wait ’til you hear Mr Beatnick’s contribution. It’s a killer!

V/A “Quare Groove Vol. 1” (All City Dublin)
The fantastic team at All City have compiled a great collection of rare but undeniable tunes from their homeland in the form of “Quare Groove Vol. 1”. The 8-track compilation holds a nice mixture of Irish Groove, Post-Punk, and Electro, focusing on the stranger side of Irish musicology from the 1970s & ’80s. A totally fun and educational listen throughout!

Collocutor “Black Satin” (On The Corner Records)
Hot off the back of winning Label Of The Year at the Worldwide awards, On The Corner releases a brand new EP of new tracks and remixes from Collocutor, led by Tamar Osborn. The highlight here being the blistering version of Miles Davis’ fusion classic, Black Satin. Having seen Tamar and co incorporate it into their increasingly “psyched out” sets over the past year it’s wonderful to have it on wax at last.

SHUTTLE358 “Field” (12k Records)
Drift into the far left field with the latest long-player released through Taylor Deupree’s 12k Records. SHUTTLE358’s Dan Abrams strips electronic pops, clicks, and tones to the bare essentials producing a beautiful look at minimalism at its finest. It comes at no surprise that Taylor Deupree picked this one up because it absolutely draws comparisons to his own work, as well as that of Jan Jelinek, Oval, and Robert Henke. Sometimes less is more, ya know?

Grems “Album Sans Titre #7” (12k Records)
Grems is hands down my favorite French MC, and has been for probably around 10 years. The man is criminally underrated but I don’t think he cares much about proving people or the industry wrong. As always, he comes heavy on his 7th album and has a unique ear for production collaboration choices as is evident on the Nikitch-produced lead single “Fantomas”.

K15 “Sunbeams” (Eglo Records)
K15 has been smashing it these past couple months and years. He’s the one producer who fits equally within the Detroit abstract house scene but also on the UK house meets broken beat side of things. An outstanding EP here on the always reliable Eglo Records. The title track is especially brilliant: shades of Brazilian Jazz Fusion and the glory days of Broken Beat when Goya was churning out classic after classic.

Sully “Blue” (Keysound)
Sully is another producer that is very underrated in my book. Been buying his stuff for years and although I rarely get a chance to play his releases. This one especially brings me back to the glory years of 90’s Jungle but still feels like the sound is pushing beyond the simple nostalgia of the exercise. Anything on Keysound or by Sully gets my vote!

Henry Keen “70’s Baby” (MaddJazz Recordings)
To be fair, this one has been out for about 2 months on wax but just got released on digital a couple weeks ago so I thought I’d highlight it because it’s that good! It’s got that unmistakable London feeling to it all. A brilliant collection of productions from this synth enthusiast.

Theo Parrish “Preacher’s Coming (Sound Signature)
Theo doesn’t release a ton of stuff but every time it’s pretty much essential. As with everything released on Sound Signature it’s always something that challenges the dance floor audience into a more cerebral and educational way to dance.
