Following their incredible (but under the radar) album overDUBB, Durham University Big Band returns with three indelible slices of contemporary jazz.
The nineteen strong ensemble always endeavour to practice and perform contemporary Jazz music and to convey gatherings of people nearer to both cutting edge works of art and new material from the most youthful era of UK artisans. The lead track and this year’s winner of the Durham Distillery Composition Prize, “On Sugarloaf Mountain” an intricately crafted, and ever-evolving piece of music that will leave you comforted and relaxed.
Elsewhere, Kenny Wheler’s reinterpretation of the Irving Berlin standard “How Deep Is The Ocean” (grab for free via Soundcloud), is a uniquely stirring and sentimental reimagining. Daniel Garel’s rethinks Taylor McFerrin’s electronic groove based piece, “Already There,” into a dynamic and marvellously experimental big band jazz number. This three track EP is exquisite, exquisite indeed.
