Ok, this is the very definition of a Forgotten Treasure (check out the rest of the series here) because the first reflex you have when listening to this is “is this a new Akhenaton track?”, “did IAM release yet another sub-par record?”. Nopes. This is actually a verrry slept-on (including by me) track from his 2001 record called “Sol Invictus”.
In case you’ve never been exposed to french hip-hop – yes we know it’s not easy to pull off – Akhenaton is a founding member of IAM, rap group from Marseille that was without a doubt the most influencial french hip-hop act ever.

Oh man…I remember HATING that whole Akhenaton album because it didn’t sound like Metheque et Mat (still my favorite French Hip-Hop LP tied with the first Fonky Fam album). It’s pretty damn incredible in retrospect though once you accept it for what it is.
Yeah man… Métheque et Mat was pretty dope. Sol Invictus is not one of the best french LPs ut you gotta admit, that jam is pretty solid.
I think i’ll list my favorite french LP’s soon… tough.
@Sach O: I had the same reaction. When it came out, I was disappointed because it was in no way similar to Métèque et Mat. I slept on it for a few months, then gave it a new try..and BOOM! I understood everything. There are some other gems on it like Paese, L’assassin au SM, C’est ça mon frère…
it took me like 7 years to give it another shot! Boom!
