Post by Walla P following his guest set on WEFUNK Radio Show 781
Being invited to play on the infamous WEFUNK Radio show is always an honour. I’m always looking forward to kick it with Groove & Static, and I challenge myself to play tracks that haven’t been played on previous shows (which is quite an exhaustive task).
In the second half of my set,I wanted to give visibility to some modern funk gems, but also revive a few modern soul/boogie classics, including this cut from Kevin Johnson “You Walked Out On Me”. It was pressed back in 1983, and it created a little buzz, so my homie Eddie Pendergrass did a re-issue via his label Eddie Pendergrass Presents. It’s the perfect jam to send to your ex-girl: perfect soulful vocals, laid-back synths and a smooth bass, which lead you to think that Johnson’s was bitter about his ex-partner, while in reality he’s talking about his previous group members… but that, she doesn’t need to know. “Pack up your bags and gather your rags”. The instrumental version is also a nice boogie nugget.
Eddie Pendergrass, who’s based in Brooklyn, is planning to release more obscure boogie/modern soul jams, as well as other modern funk tracks that don’t always make the cut on an EP/LP. He just released the monstrous “All Right Now/Back To L.A.” by XL Middleton on 7″, and from a good conversation with him (he was the latest guest at Voyage Funktastique at Le Bleury) there’s much more in the making, so keep an eye on him and his gems.
