When this record came out in the spring of 1995, it sounded like nothing else around. Back then most of us had no clue who Moodymann a.k.a. Kenny Dixon Jr. was. At that point his label was only beginning to get well distributed in stores, the first two releases being absolutely elusive for anyone outside of Detroit.
What’s fascinating about Long Hot Sex Nights is that all the Moodymann musical elements and signatures are firmly rooted, shaping up his sound for years to come. The intro left me speechless back then. Under a classic Marvin Gaye groove he’s introducing his musical vision to the world. At the time names like Jerry The Cat, David Taylor, Norma Jean Bell or even Kenny Dixon Jr. where mostly new to the House crowd.
Then when the groove kicks… I still have goosebumps these days. A robust disco loop (I’ll let you figure out what it is) contrasts perfectly with those hypnotizing lush and moody keys. The snippets of vocal and sax by Norma Jean Bell come from another monster track, “Do You Know”, which came out a few months before on the mighty Grassroots Records label. Then the percussions of Jerry The Cat overlap perfectly the mesmerizing groove.
Despite it’s very laid back feel, Long Hot Sex Nights is a slammin’ House jam. It shows how Kenny Dixon Jr. was already in control of it’s craft even at this early stage of his very prolific career. An absolute summer anthem.
