Very often when I’m just getting ready to record the monthly MIMS Radio show, after a couple days of absolutely frantic music research, I look at all the pieces i’ve collected for the show and lay them all out on the table like 200 puzzle pieces.
One of the last things I do is try and think what are the styles where i’m missing some good discoveries, some months being more prolific in electronic vs soul, or new vibes vs amazing reissues.
For this one I found myself really being low on hip-hop discoveries. Yes, the new Kendrick and Action Bronson records are absolutely great but I tend to avoid records that have been played on all the shows. The main goal of MIMS remains to share some (hopefully) original music discoveries.
After quite a bit of research I landed on Cult Mountain‘s bandcamp page. The trippy abstract vibes of the UK-based rap group comprised of Milkavelli, Lee Scott plus Trellion and Sumgii (producers behind Piff Gang and Problem Child) absolutely leaped out the speakers after a few seconds.
The work of any group that describes their music as “valium-induced coma music for ignorant, celestial cult members” probably shouldn’t be overly analysed. You either are a celestial cult member or not…
All you really need to know is the beats are there, the lyrical skills as well something that turns me off most of the time when it comes to “cloud-rap” (or whatever the kids call it). But really most importantly, the style and energy is authentic, refreshing and original.
Just bought the tape. Best 11 Quid i spent this week!
