Jeremy Underground is back with another bunch of elusive and obscure underground jams for the great French label, Favorite Records. Being myself a hardcore House music records collector, I was pretty stunned with his selection. Few cuts here are totally unfamiliar to me, something rare after all those years of digging.
I was happily surprised to find 3 favorites of mine on this compilation. Groovestyle “Love” captures perfectly the spirit of the 1993 / 1994 era when the NYC / Jersey Garage sound was king. A sublime piece of raw and soulful underground business. Slamming beat, mellow keys and that perfect R&Bish vocal. This should have been huge. It wasn’t unfortunately. Same situation for the monstrous “Someway, Somehow” by Sublevel 3, a rare Grassroots release from late 1995. Only a test pressing of this came out and after that this mighty label fell into oblivion. The funny thing about this 12″ is that I was working at a used records store in the early 2000’s before Discogs started ruling the market and this 12″ was getting dusty sitting in the shelves for a good 2-3 years at the very sweet 10$ mark. Canada is also represented here with the dope D’Pac dub of “Feel The Rain” by Dionne. The dub being disappointedly short, the edit here is longer. So if you’re too lazy to rock two copies of it or too broke to afford two of them you can use this instead.
Sandy Rivera of Kings Of Tomorrow makes an appearance under the Sanjay alias, a very sought after lost 12″ featuring some rare untitled tracks. The Detroit sound is represented with Arthur Forest “Techno Soul” project and “Instinct”, a project involving Anthony Shakir. The Chicago jack factor is not forgotten with “Time For Techno” something that was released on the Trax sublabel Housetime records.
On the UK side of things, diverse sounds are featured. Mindchime lavish soulful “Disco Boogie” is included as the dub mix. There’s some UK Garage bumpiness courtesy of Granite, The Groove Monster & Richard Purser. The ravish and piano feel of “Hey Mr Shy One” takes us back to those 1994 hands in the air moments.
Overall it’s a well balanced compilation featuring different spectrums of the underground House sounds. Just like volume 1, if you don’t mind not owning the originals 12″, grab this because most of the stuff included here is pretty rare, thus expensive. Having all these jewels for the price of this compilation is quite the bargain!!!
