Future Classic: Jessy Lanza “Kathy Lee” (Hyperdub Records)

Soul

As I’ve stated before, I am always enthralled when a Canadian artist breaks into the UK underground scene that rules my every being. And it has happened yet again! This time with the mysterious Jessy Lanza, an Ontario based songstress via the ever-powerful label Hyperdub, run by the mighty Steve Goodman, aka Kode 9.

For her first ever single, she has teamed up with fellow Ontarionian and Junior Boys member, Jeremy Greenspan, letting forth a beautiful downtempo outing. Jessy has a substantial listening background in 90’s R & B, and you can hear it in her voice. An honesty, passion, and grace, that is hard to come by with vocalists these days is achieved with ease. A reassuring instance in this day and age, where image and popularity is put ahead of integrity in most cases.

Keep an ear out for Jessy’s debut LP, dropping September 10. If you want more Jessy after reading this, and I’m sure you will, she is featured on fellow Hyperdub signee Ikonika’s first single from her sophomore LP. Listen to that here (https://soundcloud.com/hyperdub/hdb074-ikonika-beach-mode-keep/s-5IBgo), and buy it July 8th, 2013 on vinyl or digital.
