It’s been a fruitful week concerning modern funk releases, and I could have done 3 or 4 articles regarding the selections in the latest Voyage Funktastique show; I cannot overlook the monstrous release by newcomer MXXWLL, and his banger 4 U (link), which has received solid reviews from many heads, such as Prof.Logik, M-Phazes & Neguim.
But there’s another track that I want to share my thoughts on, and it’s the new 7’inch by the Potatohead People, “Luv Ya” featuring the queen of modern funk, Amalia. “Luv Ya is a funky, disco-tinged joint with big bass, crashing drums and powerful vocals from the “First Lady Of Modern Funk”. It’s a Van-City all-stars connection, an extra-contagious groove that makes you wonder what would happen if they did an entire project altogether. I got my 2 copies already on deck, and I would recommend you do it too, because it’s a limited 100 press (with the soothing “Blue Charms” on the flip side)
Nick Wisdom and Astrological’s new project, Big Luxury, will be released via Bastard Jazz on March 2nd, and you can tell that it will be a massive one. Nick now resides in Montreal, where he created the Melt Mtl crew, with Pomo, Noo-Bap, Amaris Daniels, Charles Cozy & myself. Potatohead People have worked also with Illa J & Moka Only (link), while Amalia has steadily been releasing quality material via Cherries Records & Tokyo Dawn Records.
