For the record I’m not a big fan of Rihanna. I don’t really dig her voice and struggle with the sheer amount of radio play she gets. This Christmas, I bought my little sister a copy of Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange to try and wean her off a diet of solid RiRi.
This might seem like a bit of an odd choice for my first Future Classic selection; one of her most raucous, hooker-would-blush tracks. But a young chap from Leeds, UK called Jonas LR has turned it into something of a dance floor grenade. I first heard it on Kaytranada’s mix for Bromance Records and haven’t been able to get enough of it since.
It seems to fit with the whole future garage/house thing that’s lurking around pop in the UK at the moment, with choppy synths and a fabulously filthy repeating refrain throughout (I love it, I love it, I love it when you eat it, etc). And all this just as the sunshine turns up. It feels like Jonas Haslam has a bright future ahead of him.
