It’s no secret that we are big fans Seven Davis Jr. Probably not a surprise either because his blend of organic and soulful club music is the perfect mixture for any soul/funk/hiphop/house head.
In case you haven’t heard of SDJR yet, the best current comparaisons I could make are Peven Everett, Amp Fiddler and of course Moodymann. But the influences of legends like Stevie and Prince are there also. I’ve been a big fan since I discovered the amazing “Lost Tapes” on IZWID which he followed with the P.A.R.T.Y EP on Apron Records which everyone has been playing this year. There is just something great about a house music project when it’s driven by the vocalist, the end result is often proper songs rather than beats.
I must say I was very intrigued about this new EP mostly because it’s being released on Classic, which was an absolute force in the mid-90’s to 2000’s and then sort of disappeared for a few years.
“Friends” is definitely growing on me but the real killer on the EP is the “One” (Live Edit) which is a revision of a track that came out last year. I played it at our 7th Anniversary party in Montreal and it’s one of the tracks I enjoyed playing the most.
Instant Classic (on Classic)
