If deep soulful, hip-hop inspired jams are what you are looking for, look no further.
The St. Louis producer/musician (now living in LA), I, CED releases his first project in 5 years. After working behind-the-scenes with artists like Dâm-Funk, Shafiq Husayn (SA-RA), Shuggie Otis and Run The Jewels, I, CED’s latest project presents his best work to-date, virtually producing, singing and playing all instruments for each track. The album also features contributions from Thundercat (bass on the song “Forever”), Om’Mas Keith (SA-RA, Frank Ocean), Suzi Analogue, Quelle Chris, Jimetta Rose, 14KT, Black Spade, among others.
“What Are We Looking For?” gives that same wonderful feeling of early neo-soul. Swung drum chops, stripped down natural piano, popping guitar parts, and absolutely fantastic vocal harmonies that hug your ears close. A couple tracks have a Westcoast G-Funk flavour with driving synth-bass lines, while some tracks feel more in the vein of Robert Glasper. As different as each may be, all the songs work and sound completely cohesive, combining to create a perfect 17 track album.
