Today was a good day. Or, in the wise words of Montell Jordan: “It’s Friday night. And I feel all right. The party’s here on the West side.” Yes, it’s Friday May 15th and the new album from my good friend Onra is finally being released.
Known for his Hip Hop and Beats work on “Chinoseries,” his Future-Funk / Boogie influenced “Long Distance” to his Experimental Jazz group “Yatha Bhuta Jazz Combo,” Onra has always paid homage and showcased his various musical influences.
For Fundamentals, he decided to craft a record inspired by the mid-90’s classic sound and add a modern touch to it. Many people have remixed 90’s R&B or Rap classics, taken acapellas, made cover versions… But no one when as far as creating a something completely new that acknowledges the past. Onra hand picked collaborators like Black Milk, Chuck Inglish, MC Melodee, Daz Dillinger (Tha Dogg Pound), Olivier Daysoul, Do Or Die and others.
Couple things about the album, it’s all produced, mixed, sequenced with my trusty MPC1000. Yeah i know it’s 2015, but……..
